about

For this album I wanted there to be more movement, more changes compositionally within one piece than I had done recently. For each piece I wrote sections in compatible keys and tempos and then stitched them together while keeping the overall flow focused in my mind. (With the exception of Slow Velvet Murmuration because I wanted to keep that enchanting vibe going and not change it or add other sections to it

All music composed, arranged, performed and produced by Paul Ellis.

Observations on the Tracks

*1 Ancient Paths
This piece starts with a section where the sound made me think of an ancient civilization, like Babylonian or Assyrian cultures as I was creating it. No rhythms but an almost chant like aspect to the synth leads. This transitions into a percolating section that is largely a dialogue between a synth bass sequence and various organ sounds. A texture that I realized had been missing in my work. Then it curves into a section where I made a musical version of the synth effect of sample and hold (or random change) the lead was an improvised solo on the Pro-1 that had all kinds of lovely happy accidents happening there in that solo.

*2 Pulse Width
Starting out with splashes of tone color this sequence unfolds slowly revealing layers with each pass. Emerging out of it is another bubbling sequence. I wanted the bass to have an underlying rhythm popping underneath it, but I did not want a drum kit or drum machine sound on this track so I set up a couple layers of rhythmic pulsing and I animated the filters live as it was recording.

*3 Center of Gravity

The piece starts with an impressionistic, rhythmless flow... Wind blowing leaves, going into the next section which portrays sparkling light on the water
Then, emerging out of that: multicolored Autumn woods. This piece is a description of walking in remote and beautiful places.

*4 Slow Velvet Murmuration.
Erotic art in slow motion lit by the moon.

*5 Lightning On The Serengeti
My main memory of this piece was stumbling onto this way of processing a guitar sound that was fantastic and completely abstract. Not even recognizable as a guitar, but it lit a fire under the piece for me. When I started writing it I wasn't really thinking of Africa, but it definitely became that in my mind.
